Marcus Gilmore is not only the grandson of the legendary jazz drummer Roy Haynes, he is one of the most acclaimed New York-based contemporary jazz drummers. His style is characterized by The New York Times as” finding new ways to look at the drum set, and at jazz itself”, and concludes firmly:” his time is now.” Gilmore is one of the driving forces behind work by jazz greats like Chick Corea, Vijay Iyer, Steve Coleman and Ravi Coltrane. But his fame under more younger listeners has really been established by the huge buzz Gilmore created in the New York jazz underground scene, with his impressive jam sessions, where great spirits in contemporary jazz, soul, latin and hip-hop came together to play with him. It brought the festival to the idea to curate a unique supergroup around Gilmore, together with Revive Music (Blue Note Records), capturing the spirit of these jams. Members of this supergroup are first of all, the young Cuban pianist David Virelles. Virelles incorporates ritual Afro-Cuban rhythms, with contemporary electronica and classical music, with virtuoso Monk-like improvisations. The second member is the Japanese prodigy Masayuki Hirano, better known as BigYuki. BigYuki is widely seen as “New York’s Secret Weapon” and has earned his miles as a keyboard player and co-composer with A Tribe Called Quest, J. Cole and Matisyahu. He has also been touring with his own and released his second album ‘Reaching For Chiron’ last year, which resulted in his breakthrough in Japan. Finally, the fourth and last member is special guest, saxophonist, songwriter and vocalist Casey Benjamin. Benjamin is part of the Robert Glasper Experiment with whom he won a Grammy for Best R&B Album. His idiosyncratic style on the saxophone, synthesizers and vocoder makes Benjamin a highly sought-after musician in soul and hip-hop, where he works with, among others, Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) and Q-Tip.
